The Individual and Society

Hi there,

We will begin the year with this theme.  I've already chosen several pieces of literature that go well with this theme, and it will be your duty to make sure that you understand why and/or how those pieces tie with this theme.  The following list is subject to change, like many, many things will this year.  I feel that I'm very flexible with regards to following a schedule, and I find it necessary at times to change my practices in order to meet my students' needs.  Bare with me and don't get frustrated because you'll always have a warning before something major, life-changing happens.  You need to acquire a copy of the novels either through the public/school library or by purchasing a copy.  I suggest purchasing the pieces because we will learn how to properly annotate literature this year, but if you would rather check out a copy from a library, that is totally fine with me!  Annotating will require highlighting and underlining, but if you cannot write in your books, then sticky notes are great too.  You'll need to get a stack of them on your own. The novels are the first two titles listed below.

The Giver by Lois Lowry

Fahrenheit 451 Ray Bradbury

"The Lottery" Shirely Jackson

"The Lady or the Tiger"

"Harrison Bergeron" Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.

The Truman Show (not a piece of literature, but it will be used to tie into our theme)

Stay tuned for further updates and assignment postings.
